Getting Started

Step 1 — Pay

Sign up & subscribe

Create a free ScreenAI account, then go to the Payment page.
Choose Basic ($7/week) or Premium ($11/week).
Pay via Bitcoin, CashApp, or Stripe.
Bitcoin/CashApp: paste your transaction ID and submit — your subscription will be activated within a few hours.
Stripe: pay with card and your subscription activates automatically — you must use the same email as your ScreenAI account during Stripe checkout or your subscription will not activate.
Your active plan will appear on your Dashboard once payment is confirmed.

Step 2 — Download

Download ScreenAI

Head to the Downloads page or your Dashboard.
Basic: requires Python installed on your PC.
Premium: standalone .exe — no Python needed, just run it.
After downloading, extract the zip and run the exe file.
If a "Windows protected your PC" popup appears, click "More info" then "Run anyway".
Launch it and sign in with your screenai.site email and password when prompted.

Step 3 — README

Read the README first

Open the README file included in your download.
Read the full setup instructions before your first use.
Pay special attention to the section for your specific proctoring software (Lockdown Browser, Honorlock, etc).
Do not use ScreenAI in a real exam without a practice run first.

Respondus LockDown Browser installed on your PC
An active ScreenAI Lockdown subscription
Active subscription confirmed on your Dashboard

⚠ CRITICAL — Do this BEFORE setup

Disable all security software first

ScreenAI Lockdown uses low-level techniques that security software will block silently. You must disable all of the following before running the installer or the application:

Windows Defender — Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Manage settings → turn off Real-time protection. Note: Windows may re-enable this after every reboot — check each time.
Smart App Control — Open Windows Security → App & browser control → Smart App Control settings → set to Off. Warning: once turned off it cannot be re-enabled without resetting Windows.
Anti-cheat software — Riot Vanguard (Valorant), Easy Anti-Cheat (Fortnite, Apex), BattlEye (PUBG, R6 Siege). These run in the background even when the game is closed — uninstall the game or disable the anti-cheat client.
Third-party antivirus — Disable Malwarebytes, Avast, AVG, Norton, McAfee, Bitdefender, Kaspersky, or any other AV completely.

⛔ If any of the above are active during setup or use, the overlay will fail to inject, files may be quarantined, or the application will crash silently.

Setup & Login

Step 1 — One-time Setup

Install the application

Disable all security software first (see Critical Warning above).
Extract the downloaded zip file — right-click the zip and select "Extract All". Do not run files directly from inside the zip.
Right-click the installer and select "Run as administrator".
If you see "Windows protected your PC", click "More info" then "Run anyway".
The installer auto-detects where LockDown Browser is installed, adds necessary exclusions, and completes setup. Done in seconds.

💡 Setup only needs to be done once per machine, or again after a Windows update. If it says "Could not find LockDown Browser", install LDB first, then re-run the installer.

Step 2 — Login

Sign in every session

Right-click the main application → "Run as administrator". Must be done every time.
If "Windows protected your PC" appears, click More info, then click "Run anyway".
Enter your screenai.site email and password, then click Sign In.

Step 3 — Boot Mode & Inject

Choose mode and start

Select your boot mode on the main screen:

Main Overlay Recommended — Full answer panel with scrolling. Hover the corner tab for 1.5 seconds to open the panel.
Cursor Bubble Beta — Completely invisible. Hover the invisible corner zone for 1 second to scan. The answer appears as a small text bubble near your cursor, then auto-hides.

Click Settings to adjust preferences before injecting.
Click "Inject and Start".
Open Respondus LockDown Browser and start your exam.

💡 Start with Main Overlay until you are comfortable with the application.

How to Use

Main Overlay Mode

Using the panel during an exam

Hover over the corner tab for 1.5 seconds to reveal the full panel.
Hover over Capture — the overlay captures your screen and sends it to the AI.
The AI answer appears in the text area. Scroll up/down for longer answers.
Hover the corner tab again to collapse the panel.

Response modes: Choose Minimal, Concise, or Detailed depending on how much detail you need.
Context: Toggle in the panel header. When on, the AI remembers previous captures for follow-up questions.
Invisible: Toggle in the panel header. When on, the tab becomes fully transparent — the hover area is still active.

Cursor Bubble Mode

Fully invisible mode

The overlay stays completely invisible at all times — no panel, no visible UI.
Hover the invisible corner zone for 1 second to scan the screen.
"Asking AI, please wait..." appears next to your cursor.
The answer replaces it as a small text bubble, then auto-hides after the display time (default 10 seconds, adjustable 3–60 seconds in Settings).

⚠ Do NOT use any hotkeys while inside an exam. Only use them before or after.

General Settings

Customize before injecting

Click Settings on the main screen before clicking "Inject and Start".

Response length — Minimal, Concise, or Detailed
Context memory — AI remembers previous scans for follow-up questions
Invisible tab — Corner tab becomes fully transparent
Text size — Small, Medium, or Large
Overlay corner — Pin the overlay to any of the four screen corners
Invisible hover area — Multiplier (2x–6x) for the hidden tab's hover hit zone
LDB folder path — Set manually or use Auto-detect if LockDown Browser is not found

Bubble Mode Settings

Bubble-specific options

Bubble follows cursor — When on, the answer bubble stays near your cursor. When off, it locks in place where the scan fired.
Display time — How long the answer bubble stays on screen before auto-hiding (3–60 seconds, default 10).

Recommended Workflow

Every Exam Session

Step-by-step

Disable Windows Defender, Smart App Control, OneDrive, and any anti-cheat or antivirus software.
Run the installer as administrator (first time only, or after a Windows update).
Run the main application as administrator.
Log in with your email and password.
Choose your boot mode (Main Overlay or Cursor Bubble).
(Optional) Open Settings to adjust preferences.
Click "Inject and Start".
Open LockDown Browser and start your exam.
When done: Ctrl+Shift+S → Deject → Quit.

Troubleshooting

Overlay not appearing

Injection blocked

Security software is blocking the overlay. Make sure you have disabled Windows Defender real-time protection, Smart App Control (set to Off), all anti-cheat software, any third-party antivirus, and OneDrive.
Re-run the installer as administrator, then try again.
If it still fails, restart your PC after disabling everything, re-run the installer, then launch the app.

LockDown Browser not found

Path not detected

Open the application → Settings, and paste the actual LockDown Browser install path into the LDB folder field, then click Save.
Re-run the installer as administrator after updating the path.

App window disappeared

Window hidden

Use Ctrl + Shift + S to bring it back.
You can also find the process in Task Manager → right-click → Switch To.
Do not use this shortcut during an active exam.

Defender keeps re-enabling / deleting files

Windows fighting back

Windows sometimes turns Defender back on after a reboot. Disable it again before each session.
Re-run the installer as administrator — it re-adds the necessary exclusions.
Make sure Smart App Control is set to Off (not Evaluation or On).

Permission / Connection / Key errors

Common errors

Permission denied — right-click the application and select "Run as administrator".
Connection error — check your internet connection and make sure screenai.site is reachable.
Key not recognized — you need a Lockdown-specific key from screenai.site. Regular ScreenAI API keys do not work.
Already running — only one copy can run at a time. Open Task Manager, end the existing process, then relaunch.

Still not working?

Last resort

Go to Windows Security → App & browser control → Smart App Control and make sure it is set to Off.
Re-run the installer as administrator, then try again.
